High street giant M&S has urged shoppers not to drink its passion star martini or gin and tonic cocktail cans this summer. But there’s a good reason for it.


“Earlier this week, the retailer launched two different alcoholic sorbets – Gin & Tonic and Passion Star Martini. The Gin & Tonic sorbet is made with REAL gin, and a hint of lime and tonic flavouring. The Passion Star Martini Sorbet is made with passion fruit juice, vodka and a hint of vanilla!”

But while meat is known as an important source of nutrients, such as protein, iron and B12, is it possible to get the equivalent value from plant-based alternatives?“Yes, but it depends how you do it,” says Priya Tew, director of Dietitian UK. Relying on ultra-processed ready meals or plant-based “meatballs”, say, is not going to be nutritionally superior to meat. In fact, adds Tew, “that can be worse”.
